There are several exciting changes for next year:

-The application will be online instead of paper.
-The program kickoff will be at a local historic site right before teacher workdays begin.
-We will have one content instructor for the fall semester and one for the spring to make the information flow from one session to the next.
-Our content experts for next year will be Dr. Monica Gisolfi and Dr. Chris Fonvielle, both from UNCW.
-We are planning a Summer Institute in Charleston June 20-23, 2011.
-In addition to online discussion led by Dr. Gisolfi and Dr. Fonvielle, we will have face-to-face Professional Learning Communities that will meet once a month at a time and location of your choice.
-We will still offer 120 hours of contact time (12 full CEUs if you attend all events).
-You can choose the $1000 stipend or get graduate credit if you prefer.
-We are also looking into the following possibilities: netbooks for teacher use during the project year, an elementary pedagogy instructor, and mini-grants.

If you have questions, email Cara (cara_ward@pender.k12.nc.us)

David La Vere's Native American Workshop Rescheduled

Good news!

We are able to reschedule Dr. La Vere's Native American workshop for April 17th. Two of the four, Major General Joseph McNeil and Franklin McCain will be on hand to speak and answer questions at UNCW on Feb. 9 at Kenan Auditorium, 7:00 pm. We have so many here in North Carolina and the history there is rich!

Things you can discuss: the move from church yard grave sites to rural grave sites. Why did this happen? This history touches on industrialization, the Enlightenment and ideas of church authority, as well as the development of medicine as a field that impacts public policy. In addition different religious traditions conceive of the afterlife in different ways, and these are all reflected in tombstones and funerary iconography.

Interesting stuff! And, free and local.

Best books that discuss American history and death and funeral rituals: "The Sacred Remains: American Attitudes Toward Death" by Professor Gary Laderman. "Purified by Fire: A History of Cremation in America" by Professor Stephen Prothero. Each offers an insight into traditional American history through funerary observances.

See you soon!

Greetings from Dr. Pasulka ( coordinator of Learning Communities, university director)

Hi Folks!

Welcome to our blog and forum for Teaching American History in North Carolina!

We are excited to start our year, and I am excited to facilitate the learning communities.
